For years I’ve used a basic, $6 Hakko 40w iron. it got most of the jobs done fairly well.. The TS100 is much better than they are in all categories. The interchangeable tips and proper, fine temperature control are excellent. In addition to the open source firmware and schematics making it easy and legal to modify, repair and use for a long time! The overall design is great, however the ergonomics in the handle make it slightly awkward to hold as it’s narrower and more rectangular than others. I’m sure I’ll get used to its handle as I use it more. The new stock firmware (V2.18) is far better than the older versions as you can change all the available parameters in the iron without needing to connect it to a computer. It can also display the input voltage and current tip temperature when you click the lower button when you first plug it in to power. The stock interface is simple and surprisingly intuitive. Changing the temperature is a bit strange as you push the button closer to the bottom (near the DC input connector) to go up in temperature and the button closer to the top to go down. it’s by no means a deal breaker and can be easily changed in software. I love the visual styling of the iron but it feels a bit more plasticity and lighter than I expected, but thats not necessary a bad thing. It does feel well built and not of bad quality at all. The OLED display is really great, its nice & bright and easily viewable in full daylight outdoors. Something thing that would be nice to have is a numeric voltage Indicator when the iron is hot for use with a battery pack as the power source. I also wish they included at least a power cable and some kind of stand in the box. I already had both so that doesn’t really apply for me. Something that I wasn’t aware of is the input barrel connector pin being 2.5mm and not 2.1mm like most of the connectors I have. Take note of that and make sure you get the correct connector! Overall, it’s a really incredible soldering iron! I highly recommend it! Zai.
