Initial "burn in" testing shows that these units will probably meet my needs (e.g. dissipating over 30 watts for at least half an hour), but it was necessary to do some finishing work before they behaved acceptably. On one unit, whilst dissipating 36W, the power FET reached a temperature above 100 degrees C (see first picture) before I tightened the screws affixing the thermocouple and the power FET to the heat sink. This lowered the running temperature down to 77 degrees. On a second unit, the power FET temperature kept below 70 degrees for 36W dissipation, but the amperage display and one of the indicator LEDs would occasionally become extremely bright (likely overdriven; see second picture). This problem went away once I cleaned the flux residue off the back of the main PCB. Now that these problems are smoothed out, I'm looking forward to using my two units for my projects.
